The Welland Canal Play
by Kevin Hobbs and The Company
The Welland Canal Play is a dynamic performance exploring the experiences of the people who dreamed of and built Niagara’s Welland Canal, from William Hamilton Merritt to the present day. Told through story, music, movement and video, this visually arresting theatre piece embodies our local history and animates the mayhem, tragedies and triumphs of this national waterway. ECT celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation with this original play about the canal that helped shape the Niagara region.

About Our Lady of Delicias
Rangel is a migrant worker from Mexico who is back in Niagara for the sixth year to work in the region’s vineyards. Lonely for his daughter and pregnant wife Dolores whom he left at home, Rangel calls on the patron saint of their village Delicias for strength. But Rangel’s divided world is more than it seems. Our Lady of Delicias is Atlacoya, the Aztec goddess of drought, and she has followed Rangel to Niagara to drink up all the water in the Great Lakes.
