Essential Collective Theatre is seeking a capable, committed part-time Artistic Director to join our dynamic team and help lead the company into an exciting new phase of development. Essential Collective Theatre is a non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to produce Canadian theatre and foster new play development in the Niagara region. We are seeking a qualified individual who has experience in theatre directing and artistic directorship and will enthusiastically help to manage the company through this next phase of growth. JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director of Essential Collective Theatre is responsible for the artistic vision and programming of the company, and for facilitating the artistic component of management and fundraising activities. The Artistic Director works closely with the General Manager in planning the activities of the company.

The ideal candidate is an experienced or emerging theatre professional with a history of leadership in the not-for-profit sector. The applicant has a demonstrated commitment to Canadian plays and has experience engaging in their development processes; takes a collaborative approach and is committed to community building.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

▪ Chooses all the company’s programming and presents it to the Board for approval

▪ Directs some or all of the company’s programmed productions

▪ Casts and/or selects all artistic production personnel for the company

▪ Designs and participates in the company’s new play development activities

▪ Directs or facilitates the company’s annual Boom Boom Burlesque and Playday fundraisers

▪ With the General Manager, implements the policies of Essential Collective Theatre established by the Board within the budget approved by the Board

▪ Works closely with the Board of Directors, including attending Board meetings, sitting on Board committees and participating in strategic planning sessions

▪ Writes all materials which describe the company’s artistic vision and content

▪ With the General Manager, applies for Municipal, Regional, Provincial, Federal and other grants

▪ With the General Manager, helps to negotiate and secure advantageous artistic partnerships for the company

▪ Represents the company, its artistic vision and its cultural priorities in local and provincial contexts

CANDIDATE PROFILE

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE:

▪ Relevant training and professional track record in directing for the theatre and artistic activities that complement Essential Collective Theatre’s mandate

▪ Knowledge of, and commitment to, the culture of developing, premiering and producing new Canadian plays

▪ Ability to work within clearly defined budgets and timelines

▪ Excellent verbal and written communication skills and public speaking

SKILLS:

▪ Experience sourcing and applying for grants.

▪ Proven leadership capability.

▪ Excellent problem solving skills.

▪ Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, tact and diplomacy.

▪ Excellent planning, organizational and time-management skills.

▪ Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of people

Essential Collective Theatre is seeking a capable, committed part-time General Manager to join our dynamic team and help lead the company into an exciting new phase of development. Essential Collective Theatre is a non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to produce Canadian theatre and foster new play development in the Niagara region. We are seeking a qualified individual with an interest in the arts who has experience in arts administration and will enthusiastically help to manage the company through this next phase of growth. JOB DESCRIPTION

Working in collaboration with the Artistic Director, the General Manager will help lead the company into a new phase of growth, ensuring that the organization remains in a sound financial position while still operating with artistic integrity. The General Manager reports directly to the Board, and is responsible for the general operations of Essential Collective Theatre.

Areas of responsibility include:

ADMINISTRATION/OPERATIONS

▪ General management and oversight of day-to-day operations;

▪ With the AD, create, implement and manage ECT’s annual operating plans and budgets, including grant preparation;

▪ Act as liaison to Board of Directors regarding the affairs of the company, including scheduling board and committee meetings and preparation of regular financial reports on the current financial position of the company;

▪ Work alongside the Bookkeeper and Accountant to prepare annual reports;

▪ Management of human resources, documentation, contracts, etc.

▪ Help to develop organizational policies and procedures as necessary;

▪ Maintain accurate and complete files and records of the company;

▪ With the AD, and Board, help to develop a new strategic plan for the next 5 years

FUNDRAISING

▪ Working with a fundraising committee, help to develop, manage and oversee fundraising activities;

▪ Help to coordinate and execute special donor events and fundraisers

▪ Donor and sponsor engagement and stewardship;

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

▪ With the Artistic Director, develop, manage and implement ECT’s communications plans, including newsletter, e-blasts, and all marketing and publicity related to production activity;

▪ With the Artistic Director, develop, manage and oversee the company’s website and its social media platforms, ensuring they are updated regularly with current and accurate information for the public;

▪ With the Artistic Director, manage the generation of the season brochure creation

CANDIDATE PROFILE

QUALIFICATIONS:

▪ Post-secondary Arts Administration graduate or equivalent, ideally with experience as a producer / manager in a not-for-profit organization.

▪ Experience in fiscal management, fundraising and marketing.

▪ Experience in working with volunteers or committees.

KNOWLEDGE:

▪ Familiarity with computer software programs including or comparable to Quickbooks, Excel, WordPress and Mailchimp. Knowledge of CADAC an asset.

▪ Familiarity with Google Analytics and various social media platforms (ie. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) would be an asset.

▪ Familiarity with Canadian Actors’ Equity Association contracts, and the Independent Theatre Agreement.

SKILLS:

▪ Experience sourcing and applying for grants.

▪ Proven leadership capability.

▪ Excellent problem solving skills.

▪ Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, tact and diplomacy.

▪ Excellent planning, organizational and time-management skills.

▪ Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
